An elderly care worker, and a supermarket worker, have both been voted as finalists in a nationwide competition to find Britain’s Unsung Hero of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Shopworker John Wozniak, 25, and care worker Paula Cortés Roig, 25, both from Altrincham, Manchester, are up against each other, and two other heroes in the UK, to win £2000 for their selfless work during the pandemic.

A new pecking order was established over the last few months, with research revealing the stark change in attitudes towards the likes of binmen, delivery drivers and posties – all of which, of course including key NHS staff, are now held in much higher esteem than ever before.

“I’m still surprised that I was nominated to be honest. Who could have guessed? These months have been like a rollercoaster and having a job where I can still help others and be part of my community has been great. I can’t wait to do better and, hopefully, win the competition. That way I could treat myself and my girl for the hard work we’ve done!”

(John, who has been guiding the elderly around supermarkets during the troubling times)

“I am really excited about this nomination! I think it’s good that people working for and against this situation receive some recognition. I have had ups and downs during this period but I’m ready to carry on and do everything I can to the best of my ability, and of course, keep learning from it. Good luck to everyone that’s made it this far!”

(Paula, who is a fifth-year medicine student and elderly care worker)

Toiletries giant, Right Guard, who are revealing the winner at the end of October, held a national competition to support those essential members of society who have sweated the most during these difficult times.

“We wanted to find and celebrate everyday kinds of heroes, who just have no idea how much they are appreciated by those around them; those who have truly gone above and beyond to make life easier for others. This peer-nomination campaign was about showing and inspiring kindness. We had so many heart-warming nominations, so we’re really excited to show our appreciation to Right Guard and Britain’s Ultimate Unsung Hero!”
