The Manchester born actor David Warner, best known for roles in Titanic, Tron and The Omen, has died aged 80.

The news was shared by his family who said he passed away from a cancer-related illness on Sunday at Denville Hall care home.

“Over the past 18 months he approached his diagnosis with a characteristic grace and dignity,” they said in a statement to the BBC.

David Warner began his career in theatre but gained prominence in 1966 for his leading role in Karel Reisz’s Morgan: A Suitable Case For Treatment for which he was nominated for a Bafta.

His career saw him portray an array of villainous characters such as in The Thirty Nine Steps, Time After Time, Tron, Time Bandits, and Titanic.

In 1984, he played Bob Cratchit in Clive Donner’s popular film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Other notable credits include Star Trek V and Star Trek VI; In The Mouth Of Madness; The Omen and most recently 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.

Warner also appeared in many TV series, including Wallander, Penny Dreadful, Twin Peaaks and the US miniseries Masada which won him an Emmy award.

He is survived by his partner, actor Lisa Bowerman, and his son.
