Ballots open today for Labour party members and affiliates to vote in the deputy leadership contest.
Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell is the clear frontrunner over Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary
Powell told a meeting rally yesterday that she will not ‘sugarcoat’ how badly the government is doing, adding: ‘When we rely on a narrower and narrower set of voices, groupthink sets in and that’s when mistakes and wrong turns happen.’
In an interview with the Mirror this morning
The Manchester Central MP called for a “course correction” after Labour’s bumpy first year, and warned that good policies like workers rights’ and rail nationalisation were being “overshadowed by mistakes”.
Powell said on X this morning “In the great traditions, I would be a distinctive voice, the members voice, full-time.”
