Two Greater Manchester MP’s are this morning reported to be ready to run on the left wing ticket in the contest to be the next leaders of the Labour Party.

Rebecca Long Bailey and Angela Rayner are understood to have teamed up to run for the Labour leadership and deputy leadership respectively.

Long Bailey, 40, MP for Salford and Eccles was shadow chief secretary to the Treasury for seven months and has been shadow business secretary since February 2017. Rayner, 39, who represents Ashton and Failsworth has been in the post of shadow education secretary since July 2016.

According to reports allies of Rayner said she had yet not made a final decision but that discussions with colleagues were focused on the deputy position allowing Long Bailey to run for leader
