A vibrant new street art project has helped transform Chorlton bringing together artists, traders and residents to create a more welcoming and colourful environment for the whole community.
The project has been led by The Chorlton Civic Society who helped steer the response to the increasing amount of graffiti being found on walls and shutters, which many believed was negatively reflecting on the area.
The business shutter design project was made after the success of previous community art initiatives in Chorlton – including artwork at the Metrolink station, utility box designs and murals on the two main Metrolink bridges – the project aimed to improve the look and feel of the area while reducing unwanted graffiti.
The project has been supported by the council’s Your Neighbourhood Fund and the MSV Kindness Fund in recognition of its potential community benefits.
Cath Fernley, one of the organisers behind the project, has spoken with local traders to identify locations for new artwork and volunteers have worked tirelessly to paint out graffiti and ensure the designs reflect the character and creativity of the area for everyday people.
As a result, 16 unique artworks have now been painted on business shutters and walls across the district centre, creating a technicolour street gallery that pays homage to Chorlton’s arts and culture industry and community spirit.
The Chorlton Street Art Project has already had a noticeable impact, helping to significantly reduce graffiti while brightening key locations throughout the neighbourhood. A Street Art trail also formed part of the Chorlton Arts Festival programme, further showcasing local talent and strengthening community connections and family involvement.
