Kier Starmer has announced that he is stepping down as Prime Minister just two years after his party won a landslide victory
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question – and I accept that answer with good grace.”
On edge of tears as resigns and says he looks forward to spending more time with his family
He says his focus now will be on ‘being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad and being the best Dad I can to my beautiful children who are my pride and joy’
Nominations for the leadership of the party will open on the 9th July and Starmer will stay in place until a new leader is chosen adding that he expected that person to be in place before the new Parliament begins in September
Starmer has become the fifth out of the last six British prime ministers to vacate Downing Street without having lost an election.
