Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and Mayor of Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram will host a remote press conference on the coronavirus recovery plans for the North.

They will be joined by business leaders from Greater Manchester and Liverpool City Region who will launch the Build Back Better campaign

Questions are now being submitted.

Both Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram have rejected any thoughts of regions coming out of lockdown at different times.

Andy believes that we should accelerate our plans for town centres given that the High Street is going to change

Andy Burnham is now speaking

The Build Back Better Campaign should be cross party, cross country and cross industry says the Mayor of Greater Manchester

“The traditional 9-5 working day does not work well-This is an opportunity to rethink the working day”

The Government needs to accelerate its levelling up agenda-It can’t just be about promises of infrastructure in twenty to 30 years time”

Throughout this period some people must have found difficult to stay at home because of the conditions that they live in-This is an opportunity to build the thousands of homes for social housing

Steve Rotheram is once again talking-It appears the link to Andy Burnham is not working at the moment

Building back better is more than a slogan. How do we fix things that were wrong in society previously and how do we build on the good things that have come out of the crisis says the Liverpool Mayor

“We are calling on the Government to commit to accelerate and expand the levelling up agenda he adds.Different areas will require different solutions”

There can be no more kicking the can down the road over Care workers he says. But it is not just care workers, fifty per cent of people working in food retail are paid below the minimum wage”

Lou Cordwell who is part of Greater Manchester’s LEP is now speaking.

“Many of the people that are keeping the economy moving” she says “are among the lowest paid.”

We have been given a rare chance to steep off the treadmill and re-evaluate our lives” she says

The Press Conference has begun delayed by some technical difficulties.

Steve Rotheram says that it will be a long time before we return to something like normal again.

He says the idea of building back better has caught on and there has been much support from the business community.
