Labour have overturned a majority of 20,137 votes, the biggest it has ever overcome at a by-election to win the seat of Selby and Ainsty by-election,

The new MP Keir Mather becomes the youngest MP currently in the House of Commons, at 25 years old

It’s the largest Conseevative to Labour swing at a by-election since Dudley West in December 1994, which was 29.1 points.

In his victory speech,Keir Mather said

“It is the privilege of my life to be elected as the Labour MP for Selby and Ainsty.Together we have made history and delivered a fresh start for our community.Now, it is time for a fresh start for Britain.”

The Lib Dems meanwhile have taken tthe Somerton and Frome seat winning by more than 11,000 votes with Ed Davey ithe first leader of any party since Paddy Ashdown in the 1990s to win four by-elections”

Their new Sarah Dyke won the Somerset seat following the resignation of David Warburton.

But there was a glimmer of light for the party as it cling onto Boris Johnson’s old seat of Uxbridge with a majority of 495 after a recount soaring Rishi Sunak spared from being the first PM since Harold Wilson in 1968 to lose three by-elections on the same day

In his victory speech, the Tory candidate in Uxbridge, Steve Tuckwell, says that “Sadiq Khan has lost Labour this election” with his decision to expand the ULEZ zone.
