King Charles III has been proclaimed the new sovereign at this morning’s Accession Council

It is the first major ceremonial event following the death of the Queen.

The ceremony dates back to Anglo-Saxon times.

The King has made a personal declaration on the death of the Queen saying: “I know how deeply you and the entire nation, and I think I may say the whole world, sympathise with me in this irreparable loss we have all suffered”

He added:

“Her reign was unequalled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life”

He told the assembled audience:

“I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these islands, and of the Commonwealth realms and territories throughout the world”

The Accession Council is a meeting of the Privy Council, a body which advises the monarch.Privy Counsellors are mostly current and former politicians as well as members of the clergy,the judiciary and royal household. Their primary role is to witness proceedings.

The Queen Consort and the new Prince of Wales are members and will attend, alongside the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.

Prime Minister Liz Truss and all six of her living predecessors were present.

Penny Mordaunt, the Conservative MP presided over the meeting.

She is Lord President of the Council and was appointed to the role on Tuesday.

Today is the first time it will be televised.

The dress code for men is morning dress or a lounge suit with Dark or black tie.

For women a dark day dress or dark suit and no hats
