Sir Kim Darroch has resigned as Britain’s ambassador to Washington, following the controversy over leaked comments at the weekend implying criticism of President Trump which included calling him inept.
In a statement Sir Kim said that in the “current circumstances” the only responsible course of action was for him to stand aside.
The president launched a series of personal attacks on the ambassador using twitter , describing him as “pompous”, “wacky” and “stupid”.
@The wacky Ambassador that the UK foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was handled,” he wrote on the social media site.
