The public have crowned UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov the World Sport Star of the Year.

Khabib faced stiff competition with pole-vaulter Armand Duplantis, basketballer LeBron James, golfer Dustin Johnson, footballer Wendie Renard and boxer Katie Taylor also in the running for the award, which was decided through a public vote via the BBC Sport website.

Khabib took his perfect professional record to 29 wins and no losses with a resounding and emotional win over interim champion Justin Gaethje in October of this year.

The Russian bravely fought just months after the death of his father, coach and mentor Abdulmanap to pull off a trademark dominant victory.

Straight after the bout, Khabib announced he was hanging up his gloves with his status as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time assured.

The World Sport Star of the Year is awarded as part of BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which is due to take place December 20th live on BBC One from 20:00.
