The Prime Minister has described Greater Manchester’s Clean Air Zone as unworkable during Prime Minister’s Questions this lunchtime

Tory MP James Grundy said that the scheme which is due to launch in May, will see
Lorry drivers asked to pay £60 a day,The Prime Minister responded by saying that he knows from experience, when you are trying to clean up air, you should not penalise business.

He then agreed with Grundy that the Manchester plan was unworkable adding that the environment secretary will says more shortly.

Last week fourteen Greater Manchester MP’s asked the Environment Secretary for an urgent meeting

The letter organised by Stockport MP Navendu Mishra,and signed by fourteen of his colleagues asked for the need for meaningful discussins around the issue and while recognising that poor air quality needs tackling,it also says the scheme places too high a financial penalty on business.

They say that since the plan was agreed in July last year, the cost of upgrading a vehicle to conform with the proposd regulations has risen by 60 per cent
