The latest estimates from the Office of National Statistics show that around 606,000 more people came to the UK than left in 2022
Figures released this morning say that total long-term immigration was around 1.2 million while emigration was 557,000
The figures appear to show though that while Migration was at record levels last year, it has stopped rising and is now likely to fall, with fewer refugees and higher student emigration
Included in the figures were 114,000 were from Ukraine and 52,000 from Hong Kong while the figures also show that non-EU migration hasn’t just replaced but outstripped EU migration since Brexit
Responding to the figures, Rishi Sunak said that the figures were too high but denied that they were out of control
He told ITV’s This Morning that “The measures we have announced this week are more impactful than anything that anyone has ever announced before when it comes to tackling migration.”
Mr Farage tweeted: “These figures are a total breach of trust between voters and this government. The population explosion continues, our quality of life is declining and all the government will do is to give us more lies.”
Speaking to Sky News,Kate Nicholls, CEO of UK Hospitality, says the UK needs a ‘fair, pragmatic, controlled immigration regime which reduces the burdens to business’.
Meanwhile Kevin Saunders, former chief immigration officer for UK Border Force in Calais, told the same programme what Border Force needs in order to properly police those who enter the UK.
