Stockport County’s Ibou Touray and Gambia booked their place in January’s African Cup of Nations on Sunday night – just the second time ever the nation have qualified for the tournament.

Needing a point from their final qualifying game against Congo in order to qualify, the Scorpions trailed 2-0 with just over ten minutes to go, with Congo set to go through at their expense.

Late goals though from Mohamed Badamosi and Feyenoord’s Yankuba Minteh salvaged a 2-2 draw for Ibby’s side that saw them book their place in the finals, which will be hosted by the Ivory Coast.

Touray played the full 90 minutes in Marrakesh, becoming just the 14th County player ever to represent his national team whilst with the club.

If taken to the AFCON, Ibby will seal his place in County history by becoming the first to play at a major international tournament for his national team whilst at Edgeley Park.

It would be his second time playing in the tournament, having helped Gambia reach the quarter-finals in their competition debut in 2021.
