Greater Manchester Police’s new Deputy Chief Constable has been announced today
Assistant Chief Constable Ian Pilling was successful after a rigorous selection process and will step into the role after the appointment of previous Deputy Ian Hopkins as Chief Constable.
Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “I am delighted to be able to appoint Ian Pilling. He has extensive operational policing experience in three police forces. Ian will be a strong addition to my team and will help me lead Greater Manchester Police through the very challenging times we face.”
Ian was born and raised in Wigan before starting his policing career in Blackpool. He is currently an experienced Assistant Chief Constable with Merseyside Police and has responsibility for local policing and criminal justice issues. Ian is also the national policing lead for vulnerable adults.
Ian Pilling said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity but I don’t underestimate the challenges ahead. I know we can find a way forward if the police, partners and public pull together.”
The interview process included a final interview chaired by Chief Constable Ian Hopkins with the Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd, Wigan Council Chief Executive Donna Hall and Dr Ruth Bromley a member of the Independent Ethics Committee.
Tony Lloyd, Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Ian Pilling was chosen from a strong field of candidates. Both Ian’s background and experience will be a huge asset to Greater Manchester Police and the people of Greater Manchester. I look forward to working with him as we build stronger, safer communities across the conurbation.”
