Household energy bills are to rise by £149 a year from October, the energy regulator OFGEM has announced this morning

The annual price cap on the average household’s electricity and gas bills will rise to £1,717 from October to December — up from £1,568 which has been its lowest level for two years

Chief Executive Jonathan Brearley said in a statement, “We know that this rise in the price cap is going to be extremely difficult for many households.”

Speaking during his media round this morning Brearly also said

“When something happens internationally prices go up, that gets fed through to our bills. That will continue to happen until we build a new energy system”

“We are excited by the Labour government’s new target of building a 2030 electricity system that is net zero”

“This will give us a stable position with customers and we won’t see this merry go round we see with the international price markets”

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said that the rise was yet another consequence of the toxic legacy left by the previous government.
