The Manchester workforce is one of the unhappiest in the UK, according to a recent survey of 1000 correspondents conducted by the UK’s leading free conference call provider, Powwownow.
Over a third (37%) of Mancunians stated that they are not happy in their job and nearly half (45%) admitted they have thought about leaving their current company in the last three months.

The nationwide survey looking in to the country’s attitudes towards work also revealed that Manchester employees (61%) yearned for a better work/life balance more so than any other city or region in the UK (50% in East Anglia, 54% in the South West).

According to the survey, Manchester is behind the rest of the UK in working culture with just a third (35%) of companies in the city offering their staff the option to work flexibly, a stark comparison to London (43%) and Yorkshire (45%).

Locals would like to see more job roles offering flexible working as an option with two thirds (66%) admitting they would be more productive if they were allowed to work remotely when suitable.

Jacqui Keep, Head of Content Marketing, at Powwownow said:

“It’s surprising that such a forward-thinking city as Manchester is behind the rest of the UK in terms of their workers happiness. We believe that job satisfaction is key and one of the ways to improve morale is to offer flexibility through working hours and location.
‘With the array of technology available and the tools used for remote working, from tablets to conference calling, becoming ever-more reliable, there is no reason why flexible working and shorter office hours shouldn’t become more of a normality.
‘We are slowly beginning to see a shift in the attitudes of businesses and employees towards smarter working but clearly more needs to be done in Manchester. The flexible working laws which came in last year have made a huge difference offering a greater work/life balance.”
