Plans for revamp of the Great Northern Warehouse on the corner of Deansgate Peter Street in Manchester City Centre have been unveiled.

The scheme,  unveiled by Architects Simpson Haugh, will
see the main building which currently houses restaurants, shops and leisure facilities, including a cinema, become a residential, commercial and leisure quarter.  and includes a makeover of the city’s Great Northern Square and Deansgate Terraces.

The first phase of the proposals will see the upper two storeys of the Great Northern Warehouse, at present used as a car park, converted to 100 apartments, with modern accretions such as the parking ramps stripped away to reveal its historic character.

Outside, the existing amphitheatre will be covered over by grass. Public space across the site is to be increased by over a quarter say the developers.

The developers acquired the site in 2013 and work on the initial masterplan was drawn up by Will Alsop’s practice, aLL Design while interior architecture and design firm Johnson Naylor is working on the interiors, while Altrincham landscape architecture firm Planit IE is responsible for the reconfiguration of the square.

Robert Wolstenholme of Trilogy Real Estate said: ‘The Great Northern should represent the best of the North. It offers one of the most significant regeneration opportunities in Manchester city centre.

‘Our vision is to create a new urban quarter that reflects Manchester’s standing as a truly global city, celebrating our built heritage and fulfilling the site’s potential as a destination for the culture, business and everyday life of Manchester.’

Nick Owen, partner at SimpsonHaugh added: ‘The emerging design proposals are shaped by the key principles of respecting and celebrating the site’s heritage assets and transforming the existing public realm. By stripping back the obtrusive modern additions and sensitively repairing and enhancing the original fabric, we aim to reveal this great building for the public to enjoy.’
