First it was Labour’s newly-crowned deputy leader Lucy Powell and now another Greater Manchester MP has warned their party over breaking its manifesto tax pledge

The Sunday Telegraph runs quotes from backbenchers, including Clive Lewis,Rachel Maskell and Graham Stringer all questioning the potential decision.

Graham Stringer the MP for Blackley and Middleton South told the paper

“I personally can’t see how any Chancellor can stay on if they break a pledge that was fundamental to the Labour party’s commitment to the public” adding

“I think there is a feeling of despair that the manifesto painted us into a corner that we should never have been painted into. But having made the commitment we have to stand by it. I just think the credibility of any Chancellor who breaks such a fundamental pledge will disappear.”

Last week Powell told the BBC that there was “no question” that the party must stick to its manifesto pledge as “trust in politics was essential”.
