Tom Tugendhat has become the latest Tory leadership candidate to be voted out by MP’s

Rishi Sunak, the former chancellor, gained the most support from fellow Tory MPs and is now on the brink of making the final two candidates, who will progress to a vote of party members but the battle for second place remains wide open after tonight’s votes were declared

Mr Sunak received 115 votes,if he reaches 120 votes in the final round he is guaranteed to progress.

Penny Mordaunt, the trade minister, got 82 votes, while Liz Truss, the Foreign Secretary, was still in third with 71 votes and Kemi Badenoch received 58 votes

It is thought that if she is knocked out in the next round of voting then her votes will determine who out of Truss and Mordaunt reach the final two.

Supporters of Liz Truss said Badenoch should drop out to unite the right of the Conservative party.
