The much-loved former William Wroe Golf Course in Flixton has been protected as a green space for future generations to enjoy.

Council’s application for Fields in Trust protected status for the site in Flixton has been granted

The course closed in 2017 and was being considered for housing as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) under the then Conservative-led administration.

The council and partners will now focus on improving the site to provide access for residents and help support nature. There are proposals to create areas of wetland and improved footpath links by consultants The Environment Partnership through the Natural England-funded ‘Bollin to Mersey Nature Recovery Partnership’ programme, co-ordinated by the environmental charity City of Trees.

The site is an extremely popular green space within the community for visitors ranging from families and dog walkers to bird watchers and joggers and, under Fields of Trust rules, will be kept open and accessible to the public, to the delight of the local community.

A spokesperson for the Flixton Green for All group said: “We are delighted that after five long years of hard work, the site will finally be protected permanently for all to enjoy for generations to come. It’s a testament of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a united cause. With the collaboration between that community and Trafford Council to make this happen, we can now look forward to the next chapter for this highly regarded and much loved piece of land.”

Helen Griffiths, Chief Executive of Fields in Trust, said: “Fields in Trust has been incredibly proud to partner with Trafford Council to make sure that the former William Wroe Golf Course is protected forever.
