The mighty sprint classic, the Scurry Gold Cup, returns to the shelves of British greyhound racing and the early betting markets are beginning to highlight a few standout names. With only days to go until the big night at Dunstall Park, the leading contenders are emerging.
For those who take part in greyhound betting and closely follow the betting across the dogs cards – read on as we dissect the field scheduled to line up for the Scurry Gold Cup.
Rioja Oisin
Trained by the highly regarded Kevin Hutton, Rioja Oisin sits firmly toward the head of the market. The greyhound has already broken the track record in recent weeks, setting a blistering time of 15.71 sec in a semi‐final outing. His early speed, combined with a perfect recent run of form, make him a serious contender to wear the crown.
Couple that with the fact he won the fixture in 2024 – and you can see why there’s plenty of interest in the betting lines for Rioja Oisin.
Shadow Storm
The Richard Rees-trained Shadow Storm heads the market after a blistering heat performance at Dunstall when he stopped the clock at 15.49 sec (-5) — a new 270m track mark. His preparation has been praised, and many bookmakers currently quote him as short as 6/4 to feature prominently (at the time of writing). His early break, combined with machining of track-trip and two-bend pace, gives him the look of a standout favourite.
Jazzy George
Trained by Kevin Hutton, Jazzy George has shown serious recent form: a dominant 15.81 sec heat win at Dunstall (-5) announced his arrival in the sprint ranks. Despite being priced longer than the top picks, he’s a greyhound with pace to burn and could be the each-way value if he fires early and scratches into a forward box.
Longacres Lad
While slightly further down the betting lines, Longacres Lad is not to be ignored. The P.J. Doocey-trained black dog has shown spark in recent 275m/305m outings — for example, he recorded a 15.25 sec best at Dunstall and has graded wins to his name. Given the right box and a clean exit, he has the tools to upset.
Bockos Buster
Bockos Buster has been turning heads with his impressive early speed in recent races. Notably, he clocked a swift 15.61 seconds over 270 meters at Dunstall, winning comfortably thanks to a sharp break from the traps. His versatility is also clear, having recorded a strong 27.44 seconds win over 462 meters at Yarmouth, demonstrating he can handle different distances effectively.
While he might not yet carry the experience of some of the top favourites, his raw pace and continual improvement make him a genuine threat. If he can break well and maintain his position, he has every chance to challenge the market leaders, making him an attractive outsider for punters looking for value.
King Jackson
King Jackson is regarded by his connections as a promising up-and-comer with a natural knack for quick starts. His sectional times suggest he possesses serious early speed, and his trainer has remarked that few greyhounds can keep up with him through to the first bend when he delivers his best.
Though less proven at the highest level compared to some rivals, King Jackson’s raw pace and recent form indicate he could be the kind of dark horse capable of upsetting the established order. Given the importance of a clean break and strong bend-running in sprint races, King Jackson’s ability to fire out of the traps could quickly put him in contention. However, as with many young sprinters, consistency, bend navigation, and trap draw will be key factors in whether he can convert his potential into a strong showing.
