Families are eating up to two-and-a-half hours earlier and lapping up tasty desserts because of the lockdown, according to new data.

As Brits settle into a change in lifestyle caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, our eating habits have adjusted to reflect our long days at home.

Just Eat has studied internal data which suggests without the daily commute, we’re getting hungrier earlier.

Prior to lockdown, the food delivery app’s busiest times for dinner orders were 7.30pm but this has now switched to 5pm.

This is also reflected by lunchtime orders, which are now peaking BEFORE midday.

And it seems every day is a sundae – with the food delivery app recording a 36 per cent increase in customers ordering desserts, with fudge cake, strawberry cheesecake and apple pie topping the list of most popular after dinner treats.

Just Eat has also recorded a significant rise in orders of sides and drinks.

While Friday and Saturday remain a busy time for takeaways, as each day blurs into the next, the mentality of a weekend treat has gone – with Brits getting more meals delivered on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Data also shows an increase in households ordering meals for three or more people – suggesting families are making the most of mealtimes to come together.

Andrew Kenny, Just Eat UK managing director, said: “It’s no surprise that during this unnerving time, people are looking to retain a sense of normality with their favourite takeaway.

“Mealtimes have become the thing that punctuates our days and a moment to look forward to when the world around us has become difficult to comprehend.

“We are immensely proud that, with the help of our incredible restaurant partners and couriers in our network, Just Eat continues to deliver for the nation.”
