For the second successive day the country has suffered its highest daily death toll since the pandemic began with the virus claiming 1,820 lives.

There were 38,905 new cases recorded on Wednesday, up from the 33,355 reported a day earlier

In the weekly Greater Manchester Covid update, Mayor Andy Burnham said that the pressure on Greater Manchester’s hospitals will be at its greatest in around 7 days time.He hopes that the region won’t see some of the problems seen in the south of the country.

The Mayor also said that there are signs that the national lockdown is working as rates are starting to fall across the region.

He confirmed that 65 per cent of care home residents have been vaccinated and it is hoped that the remainder will be vaccinated in the next week and that as of this morning and 195,000 people have so far been vaccinated across the region
