Dogs Trust Manchester is hoping National Grandparents Day this Sunday will prove every dog really does have its day, by finding a forever home for one of its older residents.

Chicota is a nine-year-old Alaskan Malamute who had lived in the same loving home since being nine weeks old, but she has found herself looking for a new home where she can spend her twilight years.

“Chicota was a much-loved dog but due to a change in family circumstances her owner can no longer look after her, so we really want to find her a home. She is due to celebrate her tenth birthday later this month so the best birthday present ever would be to find her forever family.

Chicota isn’t a typical Older Age Pooch (OAP)! She is still very active and strong and loves having a runoff lead so she is certainly not looking for a retirement home. She wants to get out and about and enjoy life to the full!”

Older Age Pooch Chicota, pictured with Canine Carer Kerry Gormley, is looking for love this Grandparent’s Day

This golden girl is looking for a home with a secure garden where she can play with her new family and entertain herself, which she particularly likes doing with squeaky toys. Although she loves going on walks, she isn’t fond of car travel so ideally lovely walks from her front door would help her build her confidence whilst she settles in.

She needs to be the only pet in the home but could live with children aged 16 and over. However, she can be nervous around new people so a new home with few visitors and no young visiting children would be ideal.

“She really is a gorgeous girl so if someone is looking to welcome an older dog into their lives, then she could be the one. Unfortunately, our older dogs sometimes wait that little bit longer to find their forever home but we’re really hoping that isn’t the case for Chicota.”

Dogs Trust estimates that up to 40,000 more dogs could be at risk of abandonment in the fallout of the coronavirus crisis.
