The Philharmonia Orchestra comes to Manchester as part of The Bridgewater Hall’s International Concert Series this February with a performance of Gabriela Ortiz’s cello concerto Dzonot.

Ortiz, fresh off a 2025 Grammy win for Best Contemporary Classical Composition with Revolución diamantina, wrote Dzonot, her first cello concerto, especially for soloist Alisa Weilerstein.

Dzonot confronts climate change and development that is threatening the cenotes, underground caves that contain crystalline water and unique ecosystems in the Yucatán Peninsula in southern Mexico. Dzonot, the Mayan word for cenotes, were sacred sites in Mayan culture.

Weilerstein and the Philharmonia Orchestra will be led by legendary boundary-breaking conductor Marin Alsop, the first woman conductor of top orchestras across the globe including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the only conductor to ever be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Alsop is the subject of a 2021 Emmy nominated feature documentary The Conductor.

The evening’s programme also includes Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No.2 and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

The Bridgewater Hall’s International Concert Series is the venue’s flagship series that brings the most prestigious classical musicians from across the globe to Manchester. Now in its 29th year, the ICS continues to present international orchestras, celebrated recitalists, and some of the world’s most renowned choirs.
