Campaigners and asylum seekers have won a Court of Appeal challenge over the Government’s planned Rwanda deportation scheme.

The judges ruled in favour of the of the Asylum Aid charity saying that that it is not a safe country to receive asylum seekers from the UK

It means that the Government has lost latest stage of legal battle, which is now expected to go to Supreme Court.The High court had previously ruled in favour of the Government

The three senior judges on the panel said that:

“There is a real risk that persons sent to Rwanda would be returned to their home countries where they face persecution when they have good claim for asylum.”

The Rwandan government issued a statement insisting “Rwanda is one of the safest countries in the world,” boasting an “exemplary treatment of refugees.”

Speaking in the House of Commons Home Secretary Suella Braverman vowed to appeal saying it was “a disappointing judgment and we will seek permission to appeal it. We hope the process will be swift.”

Rishi Sunak said:

The policy of this government is very simple, it is this country — and your government — who should decide who comes here, not criminal gangs. And I will do whatever is necessary to make that happen.”
