A £900,000 project to improve major roads in Bury town centre near Bury Bridge is entering its final two weeks.

This is the latest element of the council’s highways investment strategy to upgrade key routes in the borough.

Resurfacing of the carriageway has been taking place at Jubilee Way, Bolton Street and Crostons Road.

To minimise disruption, work is being carried out between 8pm and 3am, and there is always a route over Bury Bridge for traffic in either direction.

Details of the latest upcoming works:

Monday 4 July

Surfacing works will be concentrated on the northbound carriageway of Crostons Road (Wood Street to Tottington Road). Traffic heading to Tottington/Ramsbottom will be diverted via Ainsworth Road, Newbold Street, Harvey Street and Walshaw Road.

Tuesday 5 July to Thursday 7 July

Surfacing works (including the removal of the old road surface) will be undertaken on the northbound carriageway of Crostons Road (across and including the junctions of Walshaw Rd and Tottington Rd). A diversion route will be in operation via Ainsworth Road, Newbold Street, Harvey Street and Walshaw Road/Fenton Street/Tottington Road) and vice versa. Traffic heading to Brandlesholme Road will be funnelled through the works.

Friday 8 July

From this day, and into the following week, road marking works will continue with lane closures being set up as required. This final week of surfacing works will likely cause some delays to traffic flows early in the evenings, principally on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday when the road closures to Tottington Road and Walshaw Road are implemented.

Councillor Kevin Peel, deputy cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “These works are part of a £10 million plan to improve our highways and road safety, in the third phase of a £30m programme overall.

“We have been minimising disruption by carrying out the work at night, and so far the work has proceeded smoothly.”
