Parliament’s Brexit impasse continued with MP’s unable to come to a decision this evening on none of the so called indictive votes were approved by members.

On another extraordinary day the  options, which included a customs union with the EU and a referendum on any deal – were supposed to help find a consensus over how to leave the EU.

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said the results strengthened ministers’ view their deal was “the best option”.

Meanwhile Theresa May told Tory MPs she would quit as Prime Minister once Brexit has been delivered.

Speaking to the 1922 Committee this evening, May said ‘I am prepared to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to do what is right for our country and our party’. She then asked ‘everyone in this room to back the deal so we can complete our historic duty – to deliver on the decision of the British people and leave the European Union with a smooth and orderly exit’.

There are signs that more MP’s are considering supporting the bill. Boris Johnson has since said he will back the deal and a few members of the European Research Group who said they would now back the deal, having previously opposed it.

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell whose Comnon Market 2.0 proposal was one of those defeated in the House said on Twitter

“It’s inevitable (but disappointing) that nothing got a majority. CM2.0 wasn’t whipped for by Labour (even though it is the closest match to our tests) so we did quite given that. What we need to look at ahead of Monday is where compromise is possible and where abstentions fall.”
