Sergeant Tim Ansell from GMP’s Trafford district has received a King’s Commendation at St. James’ Palace following an act of bravery after responding to a road traffic collision in Whalley Range, back in July 2023.

He attended the incident along with his colleague’s Sergeant Foster and PC Wolstencroft, also from Trafford district.

Unprovoked, Jacob Brown, a 27-year-old local man, came at the three officers from behind with a knife and struck Sgt Foster over the head before he aimed the knife at his neck.

Sgt Ansell jumped to the defence of his fellow Sergeant before he was stabbed in the neck. PC Wolstencroft instinctively discharged his taser, which allowed for Brown’s arrest.

The actions of all three officers ultimately saved each other and meant no members of the public suffered any injuries.

Brown was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in April 2024.

Sgt Ansell was also recognised with a national bravery award at our Chief Constable’s Annual Awards in October 2024, along with Sgt Foster and PC Wolstencroft, following the stabbing attack on officers in Trafford:
