A body has been found in the River Irwell following reports that a man had fallen in.

Police were called to an area of the river close to the Lowry Hotel in Manchester city centre, to reports that a man had been seen falling in around 9.00pm from the pedestrian bridge.

There were reports that a second man dived in to try and rescue him.

Emergency services attended and, shortly before 1am, a body was recovered by the underwater search team.

Superintendent Ian Crewe, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “I’m sorry to confirm that a short while ago, underwater search teams recovered the body of a male in the River Irwell.

“This came after we, and other emergency services, received reports just after 9pm last night that a man had fallen in, and we deployed significant resources to try to find him.

“We will now be working to identify this person’s next of kin so that we can provide them with support from specially trained officers as we continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.”
