A brand-new series of Inside the Factory will be starting on 4th April at 8pm on BBC Two.

Now in its seventh season, Gregg Wallace, Cherry Healey and Ruth Goodman reveal yet more fascinating secrets behind the production of some of our favourite foods in six brand new episodes.

Gregg visits factories across the country from Crumpets in Burnley to Vegan Sausages in Thirsk, but the series kicks off with the fabulous Jaffa Cakes factory in Manchester.

The Jaffa Cakes episode is an Inside the Factory classic, as Gregg gets to grips with the fantastic machines and processes that churn out six million of these orange and chocolate favourites every single day.

Cake creation is on a massive scale, as the orange jam is deposited onto 31,000 perfectly baked sponges, before travelling down the production line at over two and half thousand cakes a minute towards a chocolate enrober for the all-important milk chocolate topping.

But before they can be coated, the Jaffas must perform a daring feat of acrobatics as they drop onto a conveyor beneath. The height of the drop has been precisely calculated to make the sponges rotate just enough to land face down into a river of liquid chocolate.

A turnover roller then flips them once again to create the distinctive crosshatch finish. The factory uses an amazing 13 tons of chocolate every single day – that’s enough liquid chocolate to fill 200 luxurious bathtubs.  Meanwhile, Cherry harvests oranges near the ancient port of Jaffa in Israel, and closer to home in Cumbria she visits the World Marmalade Awards.  And Ruth investigates why a multi-million-pound court case rocked the cake and biscuit world.
