A three-way train crash in India killed at least 288 people and injured hundreds more, in one of the most deadly train crashes in the country’s history

According to preliminary reports the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express train derailed, with several carriages ending up on a different track, followed by the Yeshwantpur-Howrah express train.

The oncoming train crashed into these cars, after which there was another collision, this time with a freight train that was standing nearby on the tracks.

Army soldiers and air force helicopters have joined the relief effort along with local authorities. About 200 severely injured people were transferred to specialty hospitals in other cities in the state, the state’s top administrative official said.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the site of a train crash
