The architect behind the design of the extension and refurbishment of Manchester Art Gallery has died

The extension which opened in 2002, linking the original Grade 1 listed building with the Grade 2 listed Athenaeum, both designed by Charles Barry was the work of Sir Michael Hopkins

The £35 million scheme also included an extension with space for learning, the collections & exhibitions, with a light-infused atrium space for people to gather.

The scheme has transformed how visitors use and enjoy the gallery, making it a truly civic space for everyone in Manchester.

Hopkins was also the man behind the Mound Stand at Lords and Portcullis House in London
