A former Tameside police station is to be demolished and replaced by apartments in a move that brings new housing to the centre of Stalybridge.
Following extensive work by Tameside Council, Watson Homes and Great Places Housing Group, Watson have acquired the former Stalybridge Police Station, Corporation Street. The company plans to develop 24 apartments on the site and will be working with GPHG and the council’s strategic housing team.
Planning permission exists for development of the site, however a revised version is being produced by the partners. These updated plans are being drawn up with a view to being on site in summer, 2022, and include the demolition of the current building and construction of the apartments.
Watson Homes worked with Tameside Council to secure an allocation from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Brownfield Homes Fund to support the development of the project.
Cllr Ged Cooney, Tameside Council’s executive member for housing, planning and employment, said, “This is an exciting development and regeneration project in the town centre challenge area of Stalybridge. The ownership of the property being secured by Watson Homes to develop with GPHG is a huge step forward in realising our vision for the town.
By bringing together all these stakeholders to support and unlock the potential in Stalybridge town centre we can deliver exciting and viable housing projects like this which will strengthen our local communities.”
Cllr Eleanor Wills, who represents Tameside Council’s Dukinfield-Stalybridge ward, added, “I’m absolutely delighted to see this housing offer which is one of many new and exciting projects about to take place in Stalybridge.
The police station has been vacant for a long time so it’s fantastic to see this new scheme come forward as it represents a superb opportunity for the town.”
