A sink hole that appeared in a street in Abbey Hey last night has now resulted in the collapse of the frontages of four houses in the street.

The sink hole appeared in Walmer Street as the result of a collapsed water main which partially swallowed up a car.

The houses had alreday been evacuated prior to the collapse of their frontages

In a statement, a United Utilities spokesperson said: “United Utilities are dealing with a collapsed sewer on Walmer Street in Abbey Hey.This has caused the road to partially collapse causing significant damage to some homes in close proximity.”Thankfully everyone is safe and nobody has been injured.”A decision was made to relocate residents of four properties and they have been found alternative accommodation.”

In a statement local MP Afzal Khan said :

The situation at Walmer Street is incredibly distressing, and my thoughts are with those whose properties have sustained damage or have been evacuated as a result of the sink hole.

I am grateful for the quick response of the emergency services – and am hugely relieved that no one has been hurt.It is critical that we understand how and why this sewer collapsed and if steps could have been taken to prevent the scale of damage we have seen.United Utilities must do more to support residents in the area.

Manchester Fire Station Manager Andrew O’Brien from Hyde, who attended the incident today, said:

“I want to praise firefighters for their swift work in making the scene safe this lunchtime, and in doing so preventing a risk to local residents’ health and safety. Crews also worked through the night at this scene, during the height of the stormy weather, and their hard work is testament to their professionalism. The safety of the public was our primary concern overnight and again today, and I’m pleased to say no-one has suffered any injuries.”
