To celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of Manchester’s most iconic and influential bands: 10cc, two special tribute concerts will be taking place at the Garrick Theatre in Stockport on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June 2022.

These concerts will feature a selection of Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart’s best loved songs, and will be performed by 50cc who are: Sean Macreavy, Paul McNulty, Matt Buckley, Paul Roberts, Owen Johnstone and Eric Baumgartner. With the notable exception of multi-instrumentalist Eric ~ who is coming over from Atlanta, Georgia especially to play these gigs ~ 50cc are UK-based.

The gigs have come about on the back of a popular podcast, The Consequences Podcast (podbean.com), which was started by Paul and Sean in April 2019. The podcast initially focused on the lesser-known Godley and Creme triple album Consequences before moving on to the rest of the 10cc catalogue.

Throughout the podcast series Paul and Sean have uncovered many fascinating stories about the Manchester music scene since the 1960s and they have interviewed 10cc’s Graham Gouldman and Kevin Godley on multiple occasions, often playing them long forgotten recordings that they were involved in.

Paul McNulty: “As well as being huge 10cc fans, Sean and I are musicians, so it followed naturally that we’d want to acknowledge the band’s 50th anniversary in some sort of musical way. We’d performed a special gig at The Edge Theatre & Arts Centre in Chorlton in 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road, which was a big success so we thought it would be a great idea to do something similar to for the 50th anniversary of 10cc.”

“As well as all the 10cc hits, we’ll also be playing many deep cuts, including selections from Graham Gouldman’s early songwriting career in the 1960s and his post 10cc success with Wax, as well as some favourite Godley and Creme hits. We’re also are inviting anyone who wants to, to become part of the backing chorus for I’m Not in Love.”

10cc are also known for being associated with the famous Strawberry Studios in Stockport. Founded by Eric Stewart and his partner Peter Tattersall, the original intent was to provide an alternative to bands having to travel to London to produce top quality recordings. All four members of 10cc had in fact already been working together as the house band in Strawberry Studios for four years before they stepped into their own spotlight as 10cc.

Before it closed in 1993, Strawberry Studios also hosted the next generation of iconic Manchester musicians: Joy Division, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Jilted John ~ all recorded there.

The 50cc concerts will form the centerpiece of a weekend of celebrations for 10cc’s fiftieth anniversary. In addition, there will also be:

  • A walking tour of Stockport, taking in The Strawberry Gallery at Stockport Museum and a visit to Strawberry Studios, with archivist Dr. Peter                       Wadsworth
  • A talk by Liam Newton (author of the acclaimed 10cc Biography ‘The Worst Band In The World’)
  • The world famous ‘Foodie Friday’ event in Stockport Old Town will feature a special 10cc/Strawberry theme (on Friday 24th June)

Tickets for these special gigs at The Garrick Theatre, Stockport are £19.50
