When it comes to betting on sports, it’s essential to learn how it works, which betting options are available, and how to use them to your advantage, thus, increasing the winning potential. So, today we’re about to cover one of the most interesting and demanding betting markets,  the handicap. You’ll find the description of it, the different types of it, instructions on how to palace this type of bet and other important guides. Stay tuned!

What Is a Handicap?

In general, the term handicap was introduced to show the betting market that refers to a situation when one of the teams gets a goal advantage or disadvantage during a match. For example, team A, which has significantly fewer chances to win, gets 1.5 goals plus at the beginning of the match, which makes it more equal and imaginary. As a bettor, you need to predict the outcome of the match with the advantage of one team. Obviously, it will be more difficult. But the purpose is to make betting more interesting. Let’s take a more obvious example.

Imagine a race between a professional Olympic sprinter and a school track champion. Who would you pick? He is probably the Olympic sprinter because he has more experience and has competed at a higher level. But now imagine that a school race champion has a 50-meter lead in a 100-meter race. Do you think a professional sprinter will catch up with the high school sprinter? Now it’s harder to predict. This will be more exciting to bet on and more interesting to win. Therefore, the odds of this handicap bet will be higher. It works the other way around if you take scores from a team.

Types of Soccer Handicaps

In general, there are not many types of handicaps, as the only difference is the number of advantages or disadvantages. But what is a handicap in soccer betting? When you open the sportsbook and find such betting markets, you will see numbers in parentheses that refer to the score plus or minus variations. The higher the number in plus or minus, the greater the difference in the score between the two teams. Take a look at the most important peculiarities when betting on football this way.

Single Handicap

  • Handicap 0.5. Let’s take the example of two premier league clubs, Manchester City (-0.5) and Liverpool (0.5). It means that Liverpool has an advantage of 0.5 goals over MC, while the MC has a disadvantage. That is a typical single variant where if you’re betting on Arsenal, the team wins, and you win the bet. In case of a draw, you lose the bet.
  • Handicap 1. The same example of Arsenal (1.0) and MC (-1.0), where now Arsenal has an advantage by one goal. So, you win if Arsenal won’t let MC make at least one score. If you are betting on Manchester City, the team must score at least two points for you to win.

Such mechanisms work with the disadvantages of (1,-2,3,-4.0) and others. Pay attention to which teams get advantages and disadvantages. And it’s crucial to understand the forces to make the chances as equal as possible.

First or Second Half Handicap

This is a type of bet that only covers the specific half of the game. Basically, your handicap only works in the first or second half of the game. So if you bet on team A with a handicap (2.5) in the first half, you will only lose if the second team scores 3 points in the first half. In the same way, if the score goes against you, you will lose if the team you have chosen does not win the handicap bet.

Handicap Draw

With a normal handicap, a draw would result in a refund of the bet. However, there is a draw handicap that can occur if the bookmaker offers a decimal handicap. For example, if the team is set at (1.0), a draw will result in a loss or win. But if the impairment is (1.5), (2.5), (0.5), the tie can occur with the numbers 0,1,2,3.

What Is Asian Handicap

Basically, betting on football with an Asian handicap is no different than betting with a regular one. The only difference is in the numbers. The Asian handicap is known for its decimal numbers, which look like this: H1(1.25), H2(2.75), etc. Sometimes the Asian handicap bet is split into two outcomes. For example, Ksh 100 bet on handicap (-1.75) will be divided for Ksh 50 for (-1.5) and (-2.0).
