Great Northern Warehouse has teamed up with Dez Rez Projects and revealed a brand new art installation in the window of 285 Deansgate from this week until 5th March.

The new window display which has been created by artist  Jane Fairhurst, features powerful symbols, sculptures and paintings inspired by the art of spinning thread and the production of decorated cloth.

In ancient times, women produced these artifacts including clothing, hats, bags and bedding as protective devices and were often associated with the magic of childbirth.

Jane’s textiles and paintings have been made in response to unsettling global politics and increasing climate change and are the result of her in-depth research into ancient objects including, amulets and talismans.

Jane employs the traditional craft skills handed down to her through generations of women on the distaff side, or female line in her family.

Wigan born, Jane is a professional artist with over three decades making art, exhibiting and curating exhibitions. She attended Liverpool School of Art at 18 years old and has been studio-based for over 20 years, working across a range of media including textile sculptures, paintings, drawings and installations.

The collaboration with Jane Fairhurst is the next instalment of Watch this Space, a collaboration between Great Northern Warehouse and Dez Rez Projects to spotlight artists and creative businesses working in Greater Manchester.

Mark Schofield, Centre Director for The Great Northern, said,At Great Northern, we’re delighted to reveal this powerful and thought-provoking window display in collaboration with Jane Fairhurst. The craft and time which goes into Jane’s work is really quite something.”

Jane Fairhurst added, “I hope the new window installation captures the hearts of those who pass by and successfully showcases the history of thread work and decorated cloth – a forgotten craft.”
