Greater Manchester is to receive a further £15.8m to fund pop up cycling and walking routes and create low traffic neighbourhoods.

The money is part of a pot of £175m announced by the Government this morning and is the largest amount given to a region outside of London.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:

“It has been great to see so many people build cycling and walking into their daily travel habits. To support them, we know it’s vital to have the right infrastructure in place so everyone – cyclists, pedestrians and motorists – can use our roads.

Whether you’re walking, cycling, driving or using public transport, people must have the space they need to get around safely.”

Greater Manchester’s Cycling and Walking Commissioner Chris Boardman said:

“I am delighted with Greater Manchester’s funding allocation. This shows a recognition from national government of the ambition that Greater Manchester has to become a true cycling and walking city-region, creating a blueprint that the rest of the country can follow.

“During the pandemic, more than ever, it is our duty to provide everyone with a safe and accessible travel option, be it for a trip to the shops, the school run or a longer commute. These cycling and walking routes and plans for low traffic neighbourhoods are another step closer to achieving that for the people of Greater Manchester.”
