Scaffolding will start to be removed from Haigh Hall as external works on the Grade II* listed development near completion.
The external works represent the first major phase of Wigan Council’s multi-million-pound masterplan to transform the iconic landmark into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination.
Contractors HH Smith have been carrying out the work, which includes repairing the stonework, windows, doors and roof, including the restoration of the glass dome and chimneys since 2023 on behalf of Wigan Council.

Their workmanship and attention to detail is second to none and I’m looking forward to seeing the hall in all its glory when the scaffolding comes down.

The exterior will start to be unveiled next month (November) when the first section of scaffolding is removed. All the scaffolding is expected to be removed by spring next year, signalling the beginning of the internal design phase.
World-renowned project managers and consultants, AtkinsRéalis, have recently been appointed to lead on the interior design phase with Stirling Prize winners, Witherford, Watson and Mann, selected as the internal designers.
AtkinsRéalis will be working alongside lead architects Purcell, who have a significant portfolio of award-winning heritage projects including the National Portrait Gallery, Durham Cathedral and Manchester Town Hall.
Once complete, the first floor of Haigh Hall will be dedicated to culture and heritage, with an exhibition of Wigan-born artist Theodore Major’s work.
The hall will also include an area for education for children, event space for weddings and parties, a rooftop terrace, restaurant, bar and much more.
A competitive tender process to appoint a hospitality partner for the hall will commence this month (October) with an appointment expected by June 2025.
The Haigh Hall masterplan includes several ambitious projects designed to improve the wider woodland, enhancing the visitor experience and providing more inclusive and accessible activities and opportunities to support the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors.
