Four senior members of Tameside Council have resigned from their roles today as the National Labour Party has announced it will step in

Cllrs Jack Naylor, George Newton, Claire Reid and Hugh Roderick all resigned from their roles the day after it was announced that the council’s Chief Executive Sandra Stewart

Labour spokesperson said:

“Due to the unacceptable working practices at Tameside Labour Group, Labour have taken the decision to implement a campaign improvement board to bring about the culture change the group requires with immediate effect.”

Tameside council leader Ged Cooney is reported as saying he is willing to step down if the party concludes it is the best decision.

Meanwhile Oldham’s Chief executive Harry Catherall is expected to take on the role at Tameside on an interim basis.

Last month a report by the children’s commissioner into the running of the council’s children’s services which revealed an atmosphere of toxic bullying in the local authority from management.
