Liverpool defender Luke Chambers has returned to Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

Chambers enjoyed an exceptional loan at the Brick Community Stadium last term and will link up once again with Shaun Maloney’s men for the 2024/25 Sky Bet League One campaign.

The 20-year-old, who hails locally from Preston, already has an impressive C.V despite being in the infancy of his professional career. A European Champion with England at U19s level, Chambers was part of Liverpool’s first-team squad in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign.

He was quick to impress legendary manager Jürgen Klopp, and the youngster made his debut for the Reds against Leicester City in September, before making three further appearances in the UEFA Europa League. Shortly after his Anfield bow, Chambers also made his first appearances for England’s Euro Elite Squad (Men’s U20s) against Italy and Germany.

The left-back opted to link up with Maloney’s men in January, having been attracted to sign due to the Club’s ethos and philosophy of believing in young players and giving them a platform to shine. After making his Latics debut at Northampton Town, Chambers didn’t look back and established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Operating at both left wing-play and left centre-back, Chambers helped Latics survive relegation and finish comfortably in mid-table. He won the Christophe Duchamp Player of the Month award for February and scored his first professional goal at Portsmouth.

Despite only being on loan with Latics for a short period of time, Chambers gained a strong affinity with the Football Club nonetheless, with the special relationship he created with the players, staff, and supporters alike being a huge contributing factor behind his return.
