Drivers are still paying too much fuel according to the Competition and Markets Authority, the UK’s competition watchdog.

The report revealed that the margins retailers make on fuel has doubled since 2019, costing British drivers £1.6bn last year alone.

The CMA say that competition among fuel retailers continues to fail consumers

The analysis suggested that, with greater price transparency to make shopping around as effective as possible, drivers of a typical family car could save up to £4.50 a tank within a 5-minute drive.

The authority found that the Retailers’ fuel margins – the difference between what a retailer pays for its fuel and what it sells at – remain significantly above historic levels.

This is concerning: high road fuel prices put pressure on households and businesses

The authority wants the Government to compel all forecourts to share live fuel prices that will be fed into sat navs and
to create a new statutory monitoring function to hold the industry to account.
