Stockport Council has begun the procurement process to produce a Strategic Regeneration Framework for the latest phase of the £1bn regeneration programme.

will provide an indicative masterplan for how the 280-acre area could be transformed to accommodate the development of 4,000 high-quality mixed-tenure homes in balanced and connected communities.

Environmental sustainability, affordability and accessibility are central to the vision for Town Centre East, which will create thriving and resilient neighbourhoods that meet the needs of current and future generations of Stopfordians. Through the regeneration of the area, the Council is committed to delivering a mix of homes alongside high-quality public realm and open space.

The plans for Town Centre East will build on the success of Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) in bringing forward the 130-acre regeneration masterplan for Town Centre West. In the five years since it was established, the MDC has secured delivery of 1,200 new homes alongside a state of art transport interchange, a brand new two-acre park and over 170,000 sq ft of Grade A office space. The plans for Town Centre East represent a doubling of the Council’s housing delivery ambitions for the town centre.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “This latest milestone will build on the great work that we have already achieved and take this exciting next phase forward. With thousands of much needed new homes already created, as well as the new interchange and town centre park for residents to enjoy, the potential and vision in Stockport is unmatched.

“The progress we have made has been incredible and continues at pace. Being recognised by the Sunday Times as the best place to live in the North West is testament to our ambitious plans and confidence in Stockport remains high.

“I look forward to seeing plans progress with the appointed consultant team.”

Eamonn Boylan, Interim Chair of Stockport MDC, added: “As the procurement process begins for the Strategic Regeneration Framework for Town Centre East, this is a truly exciting time for the future of Stockport. This latest phase of regeneration will build on the success of Town Centre West, a redevelopment spearheaded by Stockport MDC that has underwritten the town’s upward trajectory in recent years. In the five years since our founding, we’ve delivered 1,200 homes with a further 1,500 in the pipeline, attracted £600m of private investment, and opened a brand-new transport interchange and created a brand new 2 acre park.

“We welcome the Council’s growing ambition in its plans for Town Centre East, look forward to working with the consultant team developing the SRF, and eagerly await supporting the project as it develops.”

The Council is inviting proposals from teams of experienced consultants by 23rd August, with the successful team to be announced in early September.
