To mark the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s death Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre is hosting an international touring exhibition.

The display has been produced by Niels Bjerre from Copenhagen and looks at Churchill’s leadership of the UK during the Second World War

Oldham is the first stop on the exhibition’s tour of the UK – in May it will be displayed at Churchill´s home of Chartwell in Kent.

As the town where he first served as an MP, back in 1900, Oldham has long links with Winston Churchill.

Niels has long been interested in Churchill’s life and it was a visit to the Cabinet War Rooms in London in 1987 that gave him the spark to begin producing exhibitions.

This latest photographic display is the third he has put together.

The 49-year-old said: “Like many other countries which were occupied by the Nazis during the Second World War we Danes see Winston Churchill as the savior of the free world.

“It is my wish, through these photographs, to show Churchill not only as a statesman but also as an exciting human being.

“This photographic exhibition is meant to be an inspiration for people whilst also giving the viewer an opportunity to find something out they did not know about Winston Churchill.

“The challenge for me this time has been to pick out some pictures which are a bit different from those we normally see of Churchill during the Second World War.”

The exhibition will be on show in Oldham Library, Greaves Street, Oldham OL1 1AL from April 13 to May 9.
