A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit for drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving after an elderly woman is fighting for her life following a collision in Stretford this morning.

The 80 year old was crossing the road near to the Co-op on Barton Road when she was hit by the black Ford Fiesta.

Barton Road was closed for several hours and has recently reopened.

Police Sergeant Jon McColl of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a serious collision that has left an elderly woman fighting for her life in hospital and our thoughts are very much with her and her family at this very difficult time.

“Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this collision is currently ongoing and Barton Road was closed for over four hours whilst investigation work was carried out.

“This happened at a busy time of day on a main road and I would ask that anybody with information contacts the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

“We are appealing for anyone that witnessed the collision or may have any CCTV or dash-cam footage to please get in touch.”
