A woman has been arrested after alleged antisemitic comments during a speech at a protest in Manchester city centre at the weekend.

The 28-year-old from Lancashire is being held under the Crime and Disorder Act on suspicion of a racially or religiously aggravated offence and section 4A of the Public Order Act on suspicion of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress.

This comes after a report was made alleging antisemitic comments following a protest over the weekend in St. Peter’s Square where a speech was made via a public address system.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle said: “Last week, the Chief Constable was very clear that we would be taking decisive action against anyone suspected of using phrases that cause fear in our Jewish communities and in any community looking to go peacefully and lawfully about their lives.

“Words have real-life consequences, and, in Greater Manchester, we will not accept it. All members of society have a responsibility to consider their impact on others – it is possible to protest without intimidation or by breaking the law.

“We continue to encourage anyone with concerns to contact police, and be assured we will look to use the powers at our disposal to take action.”
