A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after an incident on Canal Street in the City Centre this morning.

The victim had been approached by a group of offenders who threatened the 23-year-old man and claimed they had a knife.

The offenders then made off with the victim’s high-value watch – a present he had been given for his 21st birthday.

They also stole a number of other items, including his wallet.

Sergeant Trevor Eaton, of GMP’s City of Manchester division, said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank the diligent member of the public who alerted officers in the first instance.

“I would also like to commend the officers who responded to this incident so professionally. Their swift action means that a suspect was in custody soon after the initial report came into us, which I hope sends a clear message that we will not tolerate such offending in our city.

“Whilst we have made arrest, I want to be clear that we are still appealing for any witnesses who could assist our enquiries. Do you have any information that could help us? If so, please get in touch with police as soon as possible.”
