Up to 2,500 workers are set to be transferred from London to Manchester by 2025, according to the Cabinet office, with some destined for a newly acquired site in the city centre.

Other staff are also to be moved to the office from another building in Manchester – Piccadilly Gate that will be demolished under plans to build a new HS2 station.

The Government Property Agency (GPA) signed a lease agreement yesterday with developer Ask Real Estate and its partner, the Richardson Family, for a 12,000 square metre site on First Street.

Jacob Rees-Mogg said:

“The First Street development reaffirms Her Majesty’s Government’s long-term commitment to Manchester. The Places for Growth programme is delivering high quality government jobs across the whole country, and ensuring that Whitehall can take advantage of the wisdom and experience from people all over the United Kingdom.”
